Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Nero 7 and "Winamp 3" questions -- in particular, making DVD's

Hello: I have several DVD's that I have wanted to share with anybody here who is interested, however I have had no success with Nero 7. The amount of RAM it uses is huge. (I got an HP Lightscribe DVD external drive for the project.) I finally removed Nero 7 for the fourth time and prefer not to re-load it.

Any advice as to how I can make copies of 6 discs (all non-copyrighted)

Is this tool something I can use:
http://www.daemon-tools.cc/ (I don't comprehend the "ISO" concept)

Also, I just downloaded FireFox for the first time and was able to download a show via the "Download Them All" tool. I noticed that there is now a "Winamp 3" player with FireFox in addition to the original "Winamp" --- for a computer idiot, should I just stick with the Winamp original or does the "3" version have tools that may assist me (primarily to finally get these DVD's copied and sent to the crew.)

...if I decide that I cannot deal with the technology hassle anymore, does anyone have a recommendation of a reputable vendor that will make copies of these DVD's for me? I found an excellent shop in New Hampshire that will do them for $5/disc but no text on the outside of the disc which would be a nice feature.

I trust that by now you who know me know how grateful I am for any direction.....around any corner......where it's been waiting to meet me.

Nero 7; yikes! That thing is overly complicated and wastes resources as you found out. I would go looking for a copy of the earlier Nero 6 software on EBAY unless you have VISTA on the computer.

Worry about the DVDs; when you get the music CDs down pat and know how to do them first...

cousin: thanks for all your help --- Nero 6 came with the external HD so I will go back and try it again. At least now I know I am not the only one who thought this thing was an albatross.

Be well,

Hi there! Too bad Nero isn't working. An ISO file is sort of an exact "photograph" of what's on a disk in the same order in which it occurs. There's single and dual-layer DVD's and the only way to tell which type the original is is to put it into the DVD drive of your computer and see if the total is around 4 gigs, or more, like around 8 gigs total (in the "Video" folder which is on every DVD). The files are always broken into slightly more than 1 gig portions, so you can count them to see what kind of blank you need - (up to 4.3 gigs is single layer and up to 8.? is a dual layer blank.)

But you use Nero to "create an ISO file" or picture of the disk on your hard drive for quick accurate burning. I think that Nero uses its own type of ISO which is called an .nrg file. Either way, once it's read onto the HD, you reopen Nero and open the image file (.nrg or .iso) and burn it onto a blank of correct spec.

The approx. 1 gig files in the video folder are (by standard) MPEG-2 files, and usually with AC-3 audio mixed onto the file. To put them on Archive.org, the portions would have to be combined into a continuous file or be broken down song by song and usually the sound is converted to "MP2" which is easier to edit. Hope all that is some help.

Hey AR,

I've been meaning to get around to DVD ripping and burning, but haven't yet. A colleague gave me these two URLs when I asked about freeware solutions. My impression is that he's used them extensively, and has been happy with the results.

Good luck!

i got heavily into the dvd downloading and burning a few years ago (only non commercial of course).

i use NERO to copy dvds and yes it does use a lot of resources. i use a program called Ashampoo to burn dvds that are already on my HD. i am not a super computer whiz and when i find something that works i just stick with it.

i have approximately 40 or so different GD shows (with a few JGB as well) on dvd. it would be good to get some of them out to the folks that don't have them.

40?...wow ellis, i am breathing heavy all the sudden...is it hot in here or is it just me...?

i guess in the mid-late 80s the dead started making basic 1-2 camera vids of their shows...? is that right?

actually a lot of the shows are audience shot with synched SBD audio. there are people out there who have been doing amazing work the last few years. i am guessing that there is a fair amount of pro-shot video in the vault that is collecting dust.

Hey Ashes--you might shoot our friend Arbuthnot an email. I think that he mastered this problem a while back...I am completely clueless myself, but he might be able to help you out.

WT: thank you but I have bothered Arbuthnot too many times all ready regarding this subject matter. He should think about file a restraining-order for the amount of times I have asked him the same question!

Tell me about it...my karmic debt to the guy is so out of proportion that I have taken out a loan to cover it. Now Bush tells me that he isn't going to bail me out since they have just tripled my balloon payment. Crap.

Just thought I'd mention it on the off chance...

If you decide to go that route, could you have the shop in N.H. burn the dvd for you on lighscribe disks, then label them yourself ?
